After reports of gunfire at McKinley High School in Buffalo emerged, police now believe that a teen was “stabbed and not shot.”
A Buffalo Police spokesperson said on Wednesday that the 14-year-old victim “was stabbed multiple times and not shot.”
Two people were believed to be shot, including one student, at a high school in Buffalo, New York.
Reports of gunfire at McKinley High School emerged at around 3.45pm local time on Wednesday.
A source inside the school confirmed students and staff went into lockdown as an FBI tactical unit was seen entering the campus.
As of 5.30pm no one has been taken into custody in connection with the incident, which police said was precipitated by a fight between two groups in the school parking lot after classes concluded.
The victims included a male student who was hospitalised with multiple wounds and a security guard who suffered a bullet wound to the leg.
More than 100 students remained on lockdown as panicked parents stood at the edge of campus waiting to be reunited.
One student told WGRZ: “It was crazy. We didn’t know what was happening.”
Nearby SUNY Buffalo State College warned anyone on campus to shelter in place immediately after an armed person was seen walking in that direction.
McKinley School will be ‘reset’ after the shooting incident
The Buffalo Public Schools superintendent, Dr Kriner Cash, said on Wednesday that McKinley High School will be “reset” after Wednesday afternoon’s shooting.
He said that the school might not reopen for in-school learning till 28 February.
Mr Cash told the media that the school would reopen in a phased manner. For the next three school days, he said that students will go through remote learning.
“We will be talking with students, with teachers, with all staff, and certainly guiding and directing and preparing our administrators for the next step,” Mr Cash said.
Police ‘aggressively working this case’
Deputy Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said on Wednesday that “we are aggressively working this case. We have a lot of investigators on this.”
One man — a security guard — was shot and a teen stabbed at McKinley High School in Buffalo before 4pm on Wednesday.
Mr Gramaglia didn’t say whether the suspect was believed to be a student.
The suspect’s name and description have also not been released by the police.
The deputy commissioner said that the Buffalo Police is also being assisted by the FBI, State Police and Erie County Sheriff’s Office.
Impact of shooting at McKinley High 'incalculable'
After the shooting incident at McKinley High School, Buffalo Mayor Byron W Brown said on Wednesday that the impact of the shooting was “incalculable.”
He wrote on his Twitter: “The impact of what happened at McKinley High School late this afternoon is still incalculable.”
He added that the “families are shaken, educators and students are distraught, and many of our children are scared.”
The governor also promised that the administration will “provide more details as they become available.”
The identity of the suspect has not been released.
Community leaders urge Buffalo School board to collaborate
Community leaders and anti-violence groups in Buffalo have come together and asked the Buffalo Board of Education to “let us help”.
WGRG reported that leaders from Buffalo Peacemakers and the Stop The Violence Coalition are focused on keeping the students, faculty and staff safe.
“We want to do something that’s comprehensive, and we want to do something that’s going to be impactful,” Pastor James Giles with Buffalo Peacemakers said. “And more importantly, we want to reach those young people that are struggling.”
Bishop Perry Davis, founder of Stop The Violence Coalition said that “a few years back, I was allowed to go into certain schools and have a little seminar with the students about curbing violence and trying to stay out of harm’s way.”
He added: “I’ve went to several schools and spoke with the whole student body. I don’t know why they don’t want to stop that, at this point, especially with the way the situation is.”
McKinley High security guard released from hospital
The mayor of Buffalo, Byron W Brown, has tweeted that the security guard who was shot on Wednesday afternoon at McKinley High School has been treated and “released” from the hospital.
He wrote: “The security officer who was shot protecting the children has been treated and released and is expected to fully recover. Our support, thoughts and prayers are with both of them, their families and all of the McKinley community.”

ICYMI: College cancels night classes
SUNY Buffalo State College cancelled classes for the rest of the day after the McKinley High School shooting on Wednesday afternoon.
The college put out an alert at around 4.15pm advising of an “armed person near campus” and warning to “immediately shelter in place.”
Another alert posted at 5pm announced that all classes, events and activities on campus were being cancelled.
ICYMI: Politicians respond to shooting
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown reacted to the shooting in a statement on Twitter, writing: “Today represents a very dark day in our City. As of last night, eight school shootings had occurred across the United States in 2022. Now, the City of Buffalo has the horrible distinction of becoming the ninth.
“The impact of what happened at McKinley High School late this afternoon is still incalculable. Families are shaken, educators and students are distraught, and many of our children are scared. We will provide more details as they become available.
“The City of Buffalo is here for all of those who are directly impacted by this shooting, and we are here for all of those across our City who have experienced or been impacted by gun violence. We will not rest until we stop this violence.”

Buffalo Police spokesperson said on Wednesday that the 14-year-old boy “was stabbed multiple times and not shot.”
The other person injured was a security guard, who was shot in the leg. Police said that the injury was not life-threatening and that he was taken to the Erie County Medical Center.
