Ten Hag praises Bruno Fernandes after win over Real Betis

Manchester United will face six-time winners Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-finals. Erik ten Hag’s side continued their quest for a cup treble as they saw off Real Betis and Barcelona to reach the last eight, and United have now been drawn with Spanish opposition for the third round in a row.

If United conquer record Europa League winners Sevilla then they will face either Juventus or Sporting in the semi-finals. Sporting defeated Arsenal on penalties to progress to the last eight.

In the other half of the draw, Jose Mourinho’s Roma will play Feyenoord in a rematch of last season’s Europa Conference League final, while Bayer Leverkusen will face Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.

Erik ten Hag praises Marcus Rashford’s focus, persistence and quality

Erik ten Hag highlighted Marcus Rashford’s focus, persistence and quality after the in-form forward fired Manchester United to a 1-0 victory at Real Betis in the Europa League.

Despite boasting a 4-1 lead from last week’s last-16 first leg at Old Trafford, the Red Devils boss only made four changes for the return fixture from Sunday’s Premier League draw with Southampton.

Betis made life difficult for United during the first half at a bouncing Estadio Benito Villamarin, which was silenced in the 55th minute when Rashford rifled home in stunning fashion.

The 25-year-old emerged from the break with the bit between his teeth and thumped in a 25-yard effort just minutes after he had uncharacteristically blazed over a glorious chance.

How the Europa League draw works

Quarter-finals

At this stage of the competition, no teams are seeded and there is no country protection. Eight balls containing the names of the quarter-finalists are placed in the large central bowl and shuffled.

The first team drawn plays its first match at home, against the second team drawn. The procedure is repeated with the remaining balls to complete the quarter-final pairings.

Semi-finals

No teams are seeded and there is no country protection. Four balls containing slips of paper marked ‘Winners of quarter-final 1’ to ‘Winners of quarter-final 4’ are placed in a large central bowl and shuffled.

The first and second balls drawn determine the first pairing, the first ball drawn representing the home team for the first leg. The procedure is repeated with the remaining balls in the bowl to complete the semi-final pairings.

Final

Two balls containing slips of paper marked ‘Winners of semi-final 1’ and ‘Winners of semi-final 2’ are placed in a central bowl and shuffled.

The first ball drawn designates the nominal home team for the final.

Arsenal’s Europa League exit is a defining moment in Premier League title race

The clock was already ticking as Mikel Arteta returned to the Arsenal dressing room and inspected the emotional and physical damage of a bruising exit from the Europa League.

Without time to waste, Arteta turned his team’s attention to what is the sole focus of their season, and the “11 finals” that stand between now and a first Premier League title in 19 years.

The first of which, against Crystal Palace on Sunday, may prove to be one of their toughest remaining tests. That may seem at odds with Palace’s form, which has led to Patrick Vieira’s sacking after a 12-game winless run this year, but Arsenal now have much more to overcome.

As well as the knocks and injuries that will accompany what turned into a brutal battle against Sporting, Arsenal must also deal with the disappointment of this latest setback.
