Real Madrid lift the Champions League trophy

Real Madrid have beaten Liverpool FC to claim the Champions League title and lift the European Cup for a third year in a row.

Madrid's victory makes it a record 13 overall and denies Liverpool a sixth crown in their first final since 2007 after last winning it in the memorable 2005 final.

Cristiano Ronaldo was fit and firing but his battle with Mohamed Salah was cut short after the Egyptian was forced off with a shoulder injury in the first half.

Here's how it all played out in Kiev:

What time is it?

Spirits appeared high in Kiev's Shevchenko Park, where thousands of Liverpool fans gathered in the sunshine ahead of kick-off, singing songs and letting off pyrotechnics.

One banner placed in the park offered messages of support to Sean Cox, the fan who was left in a critical condition after being attacked before the semi-final game with Roma, telling him "you'll never walk alone" and adding "get better soon".

Much of the talk in the build up to this one has been about Liverpool understandably but this Real Madrid team are on the verge of history.

Win tonight and they can become only the third team to win the famous big eared trophy three times in a row.

Here's Miguel Delaney on the significance of that achievement.
