Real Madrid lift the Champions League trophy

Real Madrid have beaten Liverpool FC to claim the Champions League title and lift the European Cup for a third year in a row.

Madrid's victory makes it a record 13 overall and denies Liverpool a sixth crown in their first final since 2007 after last winning it in the memorable 2005 final.

Cristiano Ronaldo was fit and firing but his battle with Mohamed Salah was cut short after the Egyptian was forced off with a shoulder injury in the first half.

Here's how it all played out in Kiev:

What time is it?

Jurgen Klopp speaks about Salah, Karius and the Champions League campaign on BT Sport.

"There's not a lot to say," said the Liverpool manager. "We started well and played exactly like we wanted to play. The bit with (Sergio) Ramos and Mo (Salah) looked bad and it was a shock to the team.

"We dropped a little too deep and we didn't defend (Luka) Modric and (Toni) Kroos too well. We had to run and work, what can I say about the goals.

When asked whether he thinks Salah's World Cup hopes are over, Klopp said: "yeah it is.

"There is something with the shoulder, he would have played on. Maybe he's in hospital at the moment, it doesn't look good."

Loris Karius was one of many players who left the pitch in tears and Klopp is full of sympathy for his goalkeeper who made two mistakes which resulted in goals. "What can I say, I think Loris knows it, everybody knows it. It's a shame in a game like this, I really feel for him. It's difficult to get out the bad thoughts in your mind.

"We were in the game, we did what we could. It was not the best script for us tonight. Everything was great until tonight, you go to a final to win it. It was a proper chance for us tonight and we didn't tonight."

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has apologised for the mistakes that handed Real Madrid a third consecutive Champions Leaguetitle.

The German goalkeeper had a disaster in Kiev, throwing a ball at Karim Benzema to hand Madrid a second-half lead and then letting a simple save through his hands later in the game to kill off all hope of a Liverpool comeback.

Karius was inconsolable at the final whistle, crying in solitude as the Spanish champions celebrated their fourth European crown in five seasons.

And the former Mainz goalkeeper, who only late in the season finally won the battle to be Reds number 1 after an extended battle with Simon Mignolet, apologised to all concerned when interviewed post-game by talkSPORT.

Cristiano Ronaldo has called on the Champions League to change its name after helping Real Madrid to win a third consecutive title by beating Liverpool in Kiev.

Ronaldo did not score but had an impressive game and finished the tournament as the top scorer, with 15 goals – five more than joint second place Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

And Ronaldo is so pleased with his performance that he wants Uefa to consider a Champions League name change.

Liverpool's dreams of a sixth European Cup were dashed in Kiev as Gareth Bale proved Real Madrid's hero with two goals from the bench.

That wasn't the whole story though with Mohamed Salah's injury casting a shadow over proceedings and throwing his World Cup with Egypt into serious doubt.

Those comments seemed to spark friction in Real Madrid dressing room with Sergio Ramos particularly displeased with the Portuguese.
