Middlesbrough are close to appointing Garry Monk as their new head coach.

Press Association Sport report that chairman Steve Gibson is ready to hand the former Swansea and Leeds boss a way back into the game following his Elland Road exit.

Monk will become Aitor Karanka's permanent replacement, after assistant Steve Agnew stepped in for the final 11 games of the season but was unable to spare the club from relegation to the Sky Bet Championship.

Former Sunderland manager David Moyes has been fined £30,000 for his "slap" comment towards a female journalist in March.

Moyes was charged by the FA following a conversation which took place between the Scot and BBC Newcastle and Radio Five Live reporter Vicki Sparks at the end of a post-match interview.

Moyes was unhappy with one of Sparks' questions and said to her: "You were just getting a wee bit naughty at the end there, so just watch yourself. You still might get a slap even though you're a woman. Careful the next time you come in."

The Football Association on Friday said he was guilty of "improper and/or threatening remarks" following the match against Burnley.

Alvaro Morata's move to Manchester United could be edging closer.

Jose Mourinho is considering a move for one of Morata or Andrea Belotti after Zlatan Ibrahimovic's season-ending injury left them short of an out and out No.9.

Torino are insisting they won't sell for anything less than his £87m release clause making Morata the smoother signing to complete, and the cheaper one given that Real currently want £78m, but even that has its issues.

Real have naturally already mentioned their long-standing interest in David De Gea any time talks taken been broached, and some kind of swap remains possible.

The Telegraph report that Morata has agreed to join United leaving only the fee to be negotiated.

It is understood United may be forced to go to as much as £70m to get their man.

Spanish newspaper AS claim to have seen the message which informed Costa that he would play no part at the Premier League champions next season.

According to the paper, the full message read: “Hi Diego, I hope you are well. Thanks for the seasono [sic] we spent together. Good luck for the next year but you are not in my plan”.

Tony Mowbray has penned a contract extension at Blackburn Rovers in a big boost to the League One club.

Rovers slipped into the third tier on the final day of the Championship season leaving Mowbray's future up in the air.

But following talks with the owners in India Mowbray has committed his future to the club ahead of what promises to be a busy summer in east Lancashire.

“I enjoyed the trip to India and I'm just looking forward to the challenge of it now,” said the 53-year-old.

“I think it's a fantastic football club, with a fantastic infrastructure. The job is to bounce back straight away and I needed some reassurances that we wouldn't be selling all of our players and that we had some budget to try and strengthen the team if we could, having lost 12 players through either loans going back or people out of contract.

“I'm looking forward to the opportunity of trying to build a team that the fans can be proud of and enjoy and hopefully we can win plenty of games. The only target is to try and bounce back at the first opportunity.”

Chelsea have Champions League football to worry about next year and surely cannot be as lucky with injuries as they were this time around.

Who could they sign this summer and how would they fit into Antonio Conte's line-up?

Manchester United are hopeful of doing a double striker deal for Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata and Torino’s Andrea Belotti in the next two weeks, after agreeing terms with the Spanish striker and submitting a bid of around £70m for Belotti.

Manager Jose Mourinho has been keen to completely upgrade his forward line, especially with the anticipated departures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney, and The Independent understands that the Portuguese has decided to press away with trying to sign two forwards - as well as three other players.

United in the end agreed personal terms with Morata “very quickly”, and are now hopeful that they can secure the signing of the player for a fee of around £60m.

Mourinho wants the club to get a flurry of these key deals done quickly so he can begin planning for the season, and Benfica’s Swedish centre-half Victor Lindelof is now fully expected to join United after this international break.

Progress has also been made with defensive midfielder Fabinho of Monaco, while the Portuguese also plans to bring in Ivan Perisic of Internazionale, although there a difference of over £15m between United’s offering price and the £50m the Milanese club are asking.
