Best Buy: Conger Eel

'CONGER EEL', one of the illustrations from the first edition of a new book, The Mermaid's Purse, with 28 poems by Ted Hughes and 28 illustrations by R J Lloyd. Only 100 copies in a cloth-bound slipcase have been printed; they cost pounds 85 each including p & p. Hughes and Lloyd are old friends who have done two other books together, but the commercial edition of this book will have black-and-white illustrations by a different artist. The first edition is thus an instant collector's item, obtainable from The Sunstone Press, Iffield House, North Road, Bideford, Devon EX39 2NW (tel: 0237 472435).

Tried & Tested: The Perfect Pair: Opaque Tights are a Winter Staple, but which are the Best Buy?

How did we exist before opaque tights were invented? They miraculously slim down rounded legs, they resist splintery desks and friendly cats, they are warm as well as elegant, and they mean you don't have to shave your legs all winter. Plain black remains the basic wardrobe staple - but should you invest in expensive essentials, or stock up in your local supermarket? We asked our panel of experts to test five different pairs of plain black opaque tights: Aristoc Ultra-soft, Fogal Milano 185, Knickerbox Velvet, Marks & Spencer's version and Tesco Velvet. Read on, to discover which pairs are likely to end up round your knees by lunchtime, and which are worth laying in a whole winter's supply of.

Home Computer: 'Best Buy' system that failed to materialise

IN JANUARY this year Margaret Rivers of Manchester decided she needed a windows-capable PC-compatible computer to help with an Open University course on Living with Technology. She chose a model from Wearnes Direct - a company which had been selected as 'Best Buy' in What PC magazine - emboldened by the company's '30-day no-quibble guarantee'.

Which? must question itself

THE MONTHLY magazine of the Consumers' Association, Which?, reviewed buildings and contents insurance in its September issue, and in both categories the Best Buy was . . . Municipal Mutual Insurance.
