Graeme Swann was less chirpy than usual last night but blamed that on a bout of the lurgy rather than England's somewhat sickly position at The Oval. And, cough and cold apart, there was still plenty for him to feel cheery about on a personal note.

My older children – Elly, aged 17, and 15-year-old Joe – returned home tired and a bit whiffy on Monday after four days and nights camping at the Big Chill music festival in the grounds of Eastnor Castle, near Ledbury in Herefordshire. There were dozens of their schoolfriends there, and lots more people they knew. Teenagers descend on the Big Chill from all over the country, but in particularly large numbers from the Welsh Marches and the Midlands, driven there by their mums, dads and peer pressure.

“Moustaches bring you love!” I turn around and am embraced by a trio of muddy girls with voices like blackboard scraping, hay hanging from every nook, and lipstick smudged all over their faces. It is Sunday afternoon at the Secret Garden Party 2010, and despite 2 days and 3 nights of mischief, the spirit of the Garden Party is still being secreted with passion at every juncture. It is impossible not to fall in love: with the legions of beautiful people, with the intimate feel of the festival (despite having doubled in size to over 20,000 people this year), with the perfect range of music, and the endless supply of shenanigans, side-shows, and moments of sheer brilliance.

The rest of us may be preparing for the new age of austerity, but this month's Year Six school-leavers look as though they will be the exception. A record number will be celebrating their imminent graduation to "big school" by bopping the dusk hours away at their primary prom. Thanks to Hollywood, DVDs and advertising, the American-style prom has sped down the age-range and taken off – and not just the prom, it appears, but in one case, at least, a prom helicopter to drop the pupils off (until, that is, landing permission was refused). There are clearly some 11-year-olds for whom a silver stretch limo is not nearly impressive enough.
