This last week I started reading three recent boxing autobiographies or biographies, but didn’t get far with any of them. They weren’t awful, but weren’t good either – plodding, literally blow-by-blow accounts offering little insight into the moral, emotional and financial complexities of what Mike Tyson has memorably called “the hurt business”.

The Fighter could have been a contender for an Academy Award this evening, if there hadn't been so many other boxing movies jabbing away at the judges in the last dozen years – Million Dollar Baby, Ali, Hurricane, Cinderella Man. It's like the sport itself, where a proliferation of world title fights has rather devalued the meaning of being a champion. The lords of the ring may have to settle for an Oscar de la Hoya rather than the real thing.

Vernon Forrest won world titles at two different weights, controlled his career by refusing to sign away his rights, was ignored by many of his generation's best fighters and is perhaps best known for his charity. Forrest was a well-known fighter and charity worker in his adopted city of Atlanta, and late on a Saturday night he was on his way home when he stopped at a Chevrolet petrol station in south-west Atlanta to put some air in a back tyre of his Jaguar.
