Beware the April Fools’ Day hoax: the travel desk has already fallen prey to the offer of an apartment at the top of the Eiffel Tower and a photo of Her Majesty the Queen about to board an easyJet flight.

Thankfully while the deals to Egypt being offered by Longwood Holidays ( www.longwoodholidays.co.uk) might look deceptive, they were available at the time of writing: seven nights’ B&B at the five-star Movenpick resort in El Gouna for £525 per person or £560 for seven nights’ half board at the five-star Hyatt Regency in Taba Heights. The prices include flights from Gatwick departing on 19 (Taba Heights) and 23 April (El Gouna) and transfers.

If you can get your, er, skis on, there are some last minute deals to enjoy the end of the season. Alpine Elements ( www.alpineelements.co.uk) has offers to the upmarket French resorts of Meribel and Chamonix departing on Sunday. Seven nights’ half board at the Chalet Nathalie in Meribel starts at £799 per person with flights from Gatwick (supplements for Bristol and Liverpool departures), while three nights’ half board at the Hotel BDN in Chamonix costs £290 per person with flights from Luton.

If you’re feeling spontaneous and have yet to book an Easter holiday, then look no further than the home of chocolate, Belgium. Keycamp ( www.keycamp.co.uk) has a three-night break departing 6 April for £249 per family of four, staying in a villa at the coastal De Haan Aan Zee resort. Travel to Belgium is not included.

If you're not tied to the school holidays, you could head west to the Caribbean. Kenwood Travel ( www.kenwoodtravel.com) is offering seven nights at the Halcyon Cove by Rex Resorts in Antigua from £633 per person. Departing on 21 April, the holiday includes scheduled flights from Gatwick and room only accommodation.

In New York, the Gramercy Park hotel’s rack rates start around the £300 a night mark, but Virgin Holidays and Hip Hotels ( www.vhiphotels.co.uk) are offering three nights there for £795 per person, including flights from Gatwick departing between 1 April and 31 August.

Closer to home, Farm & Cottage Holidays ( www.holidaycottages.co.uk) has good availability on properties for the second week of the Easter Holidays, including a detached barn on organic farm sleeping eight near Barnstaple in Devon. Seven nights’ rental from 10 April costs £785. Or a dog-friendly cottage sleeping four near Torrington in Devon costs £340. You’d be a fool not to.
