South Park creators had to quickly rewrite season 20 episode 'Oh, Jeez' to reflect President Donald Trump victory

The episode was originally titled 'The Very First Gentleman'

Unlike the likes of The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Rugrats, The Flintstones, or basically any other cartoon, Trey Parker and Matt Stone don’t start writing or drawing South Park episodes until just a week before they’re broadcast.

Why? So the show can poke fun at the latest headlines, whether commenting on Kanye West’s latest outrageous statement or poking fun at the latest craze to hit America, like guitar hero.

Over the last two seasons - the show’s 19th and 20th - that has meant a rolling commentary on the Presidential election race, the creators ripping equally into Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump.

However, when it came to predicting who would win, Parker and Stone were relatively adamant Clinton would become the next Leader of the Free World. How wrong they were.

Following Donald Trump’s victory, the writers were completely caught off: originally, the seventh episode of season 20 was titled "The Very First Gentleman,” a reference to Bill Clinton if Hilary Clinton won the election.

Due to the result, the episode’s angle was completely changed, and given the new title “Oh, Jeez,” the catchphrase of Mr. Garrison - the show’s version of Donald Trump. We won't spoil the plot here but reviews of “Oh, Jeez” have been relatively positive, with IGN a 8.5 score and IndieWire awarded a B.

While promoting the Comedy Central show, the marketing team managed to anger the White House, Church of Scientology, and more with some well-placed billboards. Read The Independent’s review of the season 20’s first episode, here.
