It’s a big game for…
Divock Origi. The Liverpool youngster faces Everton for the first time since Ramiro Funes Mori’s ‘scandalous’ tackle put him out of the game for more than a month. Origi suggested that Funes Mori had failed to apologise personally to him, instead issuing “an official message”, and the Belgian has warned that Monday night’s clash “will be war”. Expect fireworks at the very least.
Remember when…
Daniel Sturridge’s late equaliser salvaged Liverpool a point in November 2013? The two sides met at Goodison Park in one of the most memorable Merseyside clashes in recent years. With Everton seemingly set for a 3-2 victory, Sturridge’s late goal in the 89th minute ensured the spoils were shared.
Player to watch…
Simon Mignolet. The Belgian impressed on his return against Middlesbrough and is expected to start once again tonight. With question marks continuing to hang over himself and fellow ‘keeper Loris Karius, Mignolet will need to keep his cool in arguably his side’s biggest game of the season so far. The pressure is on and it’ll be very interesting indeed to see how he handles it.
Past three meetings…
Liverpool 4 (Origi, Sakho, Sturridge, Coutinho) Everton 0, Premier League, April 2016
Everton 1 (Lukaku), Liverpool 1 (Ings), Premier League, October 2015
Everton 0, Liverpool 0, Premier League, February 2015
Form guide…
Everton: WLDLD
Liverpool: WDLWW
Odds...
Everton win: 16/5
Draw: 13/5
Liverpool win: 19/20
90+7 mins: Remarkably, Seamus Coleman somehow clears Roberto Firmino's shot off the line, and Everton's hope of salvaging something in this derby remains - albeit by the loosest thread. They have less than 60 seconds to find an equaliser.
An ecstatic Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has been speaking to Sky Sports post-match...
The plan of Everton was wild football, and it is hard to react to this. You have to let them run and then we played simple and quick football. I think it was a deserved win.
Low on quality, but high on late drama was the story of the 227th Merseyside derby. After 94 minutes of dreariness, Sadio Mane's injury time heroics have moved Liverpool into second place and means that Everton are now 11 league games without a win against their local rivals.
Going into the Christmas break, Jurgen Klopp's team sit six points behind leaders Chelsea but, with more than half the Premier League season still to go, there is all to play for. We'll be back on Boxing Day with the next instalment of action, but until then, thanks for following our live blog and happy Christmas.
