As a Brit on holiday in Las Vegas, Carl Kelly might be forgiven for daydreaming about a role in a blockbuster opposite Gwyneth Paltrow. However, the salesman from Knebworth, Hertfordshire, decided to make his dream a reality.

Though originally only a cameo figure in a 1970s horror title, Marvel Comics' Howard the Duck went on to a high-profile comic-book career as a wise-cracking, cigar-chewing character. Know what my favourite Disney film is? Beauty and the Beast. I love the scene where the Beast takes Belle into the vast library in his castle and she decides that there might be more to him between the covers, as it were. There's something very appealing about a heroine who can be seduced by the prospect of a book at bedtime.
