Forget all usual Hollywood waffle about the actor's craft, what some of us really care about is the actor's dress sense. Fortunately this year's Golden Globes provided us with an entertaining crop of fashion blockbusters, classics and downright turkeys. Herewith, some of the key themes.

Fashion is getting back to nature, in a riot of colourful floral patterns to be seen all over the catwalks. And if designers are mad about flora, quite a few are even keener on fauna and, more specifically, on adorning their creations with large amounts of plumage courtesy of our feathered friends. That all sounds rather heart-warming, but fashion can always be counted on to be fickle, and this season she has excelled herself.

Prepare to dedicate even more time to getting ready this spring. As if putting together an outfit every morning wasn't taxing enough, this season's gauzy, transparent fabrics mean even underwear will require careful consideration.

Are you the type who can name the latest It bag with ease? Or, madam, are you simply concerned with cultivating your individual style? Even people with the remotest interest in fashion seem to have a healthy – and indeed quite possibly marginally unhealthy – obsession with accessories. But such interest rarely comes cheap. For that reason, the sensible shopper will invest in just one key piece this season – a pair of shoes, a bag, a belt or even the latest eyewear, say.
