4K smart TVs are the new norm, so don’t spend more than you have to on your next set
4K smart TVs are the new norm, so don’t spend more than you have to on your next set (The Independent)

Whether you’re looking to upgrade to a bigger screen or to enjoy the latest shows in the sharpest 4K picture quality, you’ve more choice than ever when it comes to choosing a new set. To help you decide, we’ve pulled together some of the best TV deals from brands we know and trust this month.

If you’re not sure which type of set is right for you, keep in mind that bigger doesn’t always mean better. While a 1080p (or full HD) telly will look great in most rooms, 4K displays (also called ultra HD) are now the standard for most broadcasts, especially on streaming platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV+. Though they were wildly expensive not long ago, most good 4K TVs are now cheaper than you might think – you can find decent ultra HD televisions for well under £700.

With ‘full HD’ having gone the way of the dodo, the new differentiator is the display technology used. OLED and QLED TVs are at the top of the market. LCD (sometimes called LED, confusingly) is the more affordable panel technology, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that means low quality. The best LCD TVs look better than the cheapest OLED TVs.

When pulling together our list of the best TV deals we also take into account post-processing features: these reduce motion blur and dynamically adjust contrast for the best possible picture. Fast refresh rates can greatly improve the look of football games and other fast-moving sports, a well as video games on next-generation consoles such as the PS5. Upscaling – which is how a 4K television interprets and displays older standard-definition content – is important, too. But watch out, because bad upscaling can make older programmes look blurry and woozy.

Whether you’re after a bargain 43in TV for the family or a supersize 85in model to stream your favourite shows in all their glory, here’s our pick of the top TV deals you can snap up this month.
