Visiting a great restaurant isn't just about the food. It's about the place, the space, the lighting and so many other factors that go beyond the sense of taste. David Collins, who has died of skin cancer, was one of those people who worked behind the scenes to create that multi-sensory dining experience, putting his stamp on so many of London's finest eateries and bars.

I hate to start a rave review with a criticism, but 'Little Social' isn't a great name. The jog-trot phonemes suggest something pinched and underfed, like one of those Dickens urchins called Jo or Smike. You might as well call an eating-house 'Vaguely Jolly'. And it's easy to confuse with all its half-brothers in the vicinity.

I have just taken my wife "up" to London for a big night out. She is a fabulous mum to our kids and puts up with me arsing around the world pretending to work while she does the real stuff. "Time to spoil her," I thought to myself.

If meatballs and a gibberish-spouting puppet chef seem unlikely ambassadors for a global gastronomic revolution then think again. Swedish chefs are leading a new Nordic invasion and this time it's no laughing matter.

There's plenty new to do at Sherwood Forest this summer. Go Ape! Sherwood Pines (0845 643 9215; goape.co.uk) has just launched a new Forest Segway adventure, where visitors can follow an hour-long trail through the trees on the fun two-wheeled electric vehicles. Sherwood Forest Cabins (0845 130 8223; forestholidays.co.uk) now offers new luxury log cabins to hire, from £564 for a three-night weekend break. And local storyteller Ezekial Bone, aka Ade Andrews, will be leading new Robin Hood tours through the forest on 10, 20 and 28 August (07941 210986; bonecorpora tion.co.uk; £5), revealing the legends of these ancient woods.

Late-night visitors to Marlow have often been shocked by the chilling apparition of the Grey Lady of Danesfield Park, a solemn-faced ghost holding a lantern, who glides around where the chapel once stood, before disappearing. We had a broadly similar experience on driving into the hotel grounds – seeing the chilling apparition of Danesfield House, a great white whale of a late-Victorian Gothic folly looming in front of you like Moby Dick. It's an extraordinary sight, with its tall chimneys, its clock tower and elaborately terraced gardens, and it carries an air of melancholy – the result, perhaps, of too many owners, speculators and changes of use. It was built in 1899 by the heir to the Sunlight soap fortune, who sold it the moment it was finished. It housed evacuees in the war and was requisitioned by the RAF. It was once home to the Hellfire Club of Medmenham, a bunch of crazed desperadoes from the nearby village. Since 1991 it's been a hotel. And in the past four years, it's picked up a reputation as home to one of the country's finest chefs, Adam Simmonds.

We're so proud of little Josh. Five A*s in his GCSE mocks and this week he came top of the class for carb deprivation!" An unlikely scenario? Not if Pierre Dukan has his way. The man best known for coming up with the high-protein, low everything else diet which whittled the Middleton females into walking mannequins pre-wedding has suggested that French schoolchildren should have the option of taking weightwatching as well as reading, writing and arithmetic.

"Social" is a curious word for a restaurant. It has grim connotations with social welfare and the church social, to set against the edgy appeal of social networking. In the case of Pollen Street Social, it may be just a random add-on word to distinguish Jason Atherton's new restaurant from 5 Pollen Street across the road.
