Here are the answers to this week's quiz...

Is this the greatest Oscar-winning film you've never seen?

We think we might have created the perfect Oscar-winning film: a three-hanky historical epic with Winslet, Day-Lewis and Spielberg all on board. But ‘The Tango Instructor’ is missing one vital element: your creative input, dear reader…

Award season - what a prize mess

The award-season shenanigans surrounding Kate Winslet's multiple nominations reveal a flaw at the heart of the system, says Kaleem Aftab

Heavy hitter: Philip Seymor Hoffman

He conforms to few notions of what a Hollywood leading man should be like. But no actor has a more compelling presence, and now London has the chance to see him make his mark as a director for the stage

The Savages (15)

Slick customer: Director Paul Thomas Anderson strikes it rich with his gritty new oil saga

After his last film, Paul Thomas Anderson couldn't get arrested in Hollywood. But, as he reveals here, the director has hit paydirt with his forthcoming oil epic

Thomas Sutcliffe: When time loses its meaning

Watching Sidney Lumet's Before the Devil Knows You're Dead last week, I experienced one of those inner spasms of pleasure that you sometimes get in a cinema when you know that it's all going to be all right, that the film has you, and that your fear of disappointment (always there somewhere when the lights go down) can be laid to rest. Oddly, it wasn't a camera movement that did it for me (though Lumet's film includes some lovely grandstanding tracking shots), or a line of dialogue (though how could you not like a crime thriller that includes the line "Don't get semantic on me"), or even an acting moment (although Lumet's film includes Philip Seymour Hoffman at his most satanic). It was an inter-title reading "The Day of the Robbery". And there was something about the functional starkness of those few words that was thrilling.

Spy story? Nope, more Afghan farce

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (15)

Sidney Lumet, now 83 and owner of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oscars, has defied age and expectation to make one of the greatest films of his long career. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead uses a botched robbery as a springboard into a family tragedy that invokes the shades of Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neill.
