Freemans Grattan Holdings (FGH), the home shopping group, is to axe more than 1,000 jobs as it cuts costs to help it trade through the recession. Its chief executive, Koert Tulleners, told the fashion magazine Drapers: "We are finalising consultations now, but I can confirm we are closing a warehouse in Peterborough, our office in London and a call centre in Bradford. This will affect more than 1,000 jobs."

Cool new fashion magazines are often as ephemeral as the trends they document, but you don't have to be a sartorial savant to know that one glossy set to hit newsstands this week is guaranteed style-bible status. How do we know? Well, LOVE, the bi-annual publication in question, just happens to be the latest offering from Katie Grand, the London über-stylist responsible for cult fashion mag Pop. Last year editor-in-chief Grand and her team of Popettes (rebranded the Luvvies) made a shock departure from Pop, and the hotly anticipated first issue of LOVE is the fruit of their latest labours.

New research suggests that the pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap ethos of the British high street may finally be on the way out. With more than one in three women now unable to justify the cost of keeping up with the latest fashions, the carousel of constantly changing collections – composed of cheap, disposable items – could soon grind to a juddering halt.
