‘I told them I loved them, they told me they loved me’: Jurgen Klopp reveals emotional call with family after Liverpool title win

The Reds ended a 30-year wait for a league title on Thursday night

Jurgen Klopp has revealed an emotional call with his family as Liverpool finally secured the Premier League title on Thursday evening.

The Reds claimed a first English league title in 30 years when Manchester City fell to defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Klopp’s side have dominated from the outset this term and have been champions-elect since December.

But finally getting over the line was a special moment for the German boss and one he wanted to share with those closest to him, even though they are currently separated by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“I called my family 10 seconds before the final whistle. We had a Facetime call,” he said on Friday afternoon. “I told them I loved them, they told me they loved me. It’s sad I can’t be with them. I told them to leave it on. It was a really nice moment.

“I cannot answer all the messages I got but I can read all of them and that is what I will do in the next few days.”

Liverpool look set to smash Manchester City’s record points haul before the end of the campaign in what will go down as one of the great seasons in English football history.

“The players wanted to write their own history and stories so they were ready not to compare us with those great figures in this club,” Klopp added.

“We were unbelievably good last year and smashing this record is absolutely exceptional. It is really difficult to get there.”

On whether he will get a statue like the Reds’ previous title-winning managers, Klopp joked: “They all got theirs when they were not here. I want to live for 30 or 40 years!”

Klopp is confident Liverpool will not lose the hunger for silverware after winning the Champions League, Club World Cup, Super Cup and now the Premier League.

He added: “We won some stuff but they are still humble and as long as they stay humble we have a chance of being successful.”

Klopp also reserved praise for the fans too, saying: “I know it means the world to them – it means the world to me.

“It’s massive and what I love is when you have a successful football club in your city it gives the whole city a lift. I am really happy for our people.”
