The former Wakefield captain, who was 36 in March, takes the record held by the winger Paul Sterling, who was 36 years and 44 days old when he played for Leeds against London in the last round of Super League 2000.

Davis, who began his English career with Nottingham in 1993, has spent the last eight months in France as player-coach of Villeneuve and was due to join up with the National League club Halifax.

The Tigers, bottom of Super League with only one win from 15 matches, have agreed to compensate Halifax financially for the loss of the playmaking scrum-half and are likely to play him in Sunday's crunch match with fellow strugglers Salford at the Willows.
