Twenty-five British photographers have been shortlisted for the prestigious 2014 Sony World Photography Awards after beating thousands of entrants from around the world.

One of the most renowned photography competitions in the world, the photographers were selected by a panel of industry experts from nearly 140,000 submissions by from 166 countries - the highest number of entries in the Awards’ seven year history.

The group of photographers cover a diverse range of topics in their imagery, including the impressive series of work covering the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines by Daniel Kitwood.

Also included is the unique photographic take on the Istanbul protests in June 2013 by Guy Martin and a series of portraits of jump jockeys photographer Spencer Murphy, who has already been shortlisted three times for the Sony World Photography Awards.

Photographers are split into three categories, with five entering into the Professional category, 10 in the Open and just one entrant in the Youth section.

From the 14 Professional category winners, one photographer will be selected to receive the coveted L’Iris D’Or/ Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year title at the ceremony and a $25,000 cash prize, while the Open category winner will collect a prize of $5,000. The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in London on 30 April.
