Nominations are open for one of the most influential awards in architecture, giving people the chance to choose their favourite buildings of the past year.

The Building of the Year 2020 awards, run by architecture website ArchDaily, will see thousands of nominations in the coming week as members of the public are invited to pick the best projects in architecture anywhere in the world from the past 12 months.

The awards are accepting nominations across 15 diverse categories, from office buildings to religious architecture. After the nomination phase, voting will open to select winners in each category.

Previous winners include Zaha Hadid, known for designing the Aquatics Centre for the London Olympics, and Foster and Partners, who designed The Gherkin.

Nominations can be made here and will be accepted until 10 February. Voting will then open for the winners, which will be announced on 17 February.

The Independent has compiled highlights of the nominations so far in the gallery above.
