Tunisia's Star Wars remnants revealed at London's Tate Modern

Bits of the Star Wars set were left on location and have long since gathered sand

Strange as it may seem, the movie sets of Star Wars were left in the deserts of southern Tunisia by George Lucas's team decades ago.

Doubtless the most avid fans will have made their pilgrimages out to the dunes already, but for the rest of us, a series of colour photographs show what the sets look like, in situ, now. They were left there on location and have long since been gathering sand, so that they look like futuristic ruins.

Some of them are buried in sand and the remains resemble an archeological site. The photographs were taken by the Italian artist Ra di Martino, and they will feature as part of a group show at London's Tate Modern which will look at the divide between historical monuments and discarded urban ruins.

It opens in the Project Space gallery on 1 March.
