International Women’s Day: Today's Google Doodle celebrates twelve female artists from around the world

Comic strips divulge personal stories of a specific moment or event that has changed their lives

International Women’s Day has been celebrated by Google with an interactive Doodle of a dozen female artists from 12 different countries.

Hailing from as far afield as Japan and Pakistan, the women share their personal stories in a series of visual narratives.

Comic strips, illustrated and penned by them, share their personal stories of a specific moment or event that has changed their life as a woman.

Philippa Rice, a comic artist and animator based in Nottingham, is among those whose work is featured.

Her story is about the daughter she had earlier this year.

She is keen to explore the occasions when her daughter invests trust in her and her feelings about that responsibility. Her works include autobiographical romance and animated crochet characters.

“My story is about how overwhelming it is to become a mother and how talking to others and sharing your troubles can make you feel better," Ms Rice, who creates animations and illustrations as well as making comics, said.

"I hope that if anyone reads it and identifies with it, then they can at least feel that they're not alone".

She added: “I really enjoyed working on a Google Doodle! I was delighted to be asked to take part and to have my work alongside fantastic comic artists from around the world. I feel really lucky to get to share my story.”

International Women’s Day, she said, provided a powerful platform to applaud female artists from across the globe.

For more than a century it has provided a time to look back at women’s achievements and celebrate the movement for women’s rights.

Ms Rice said it was "a great opportunity to support, promote and celebrate women artists and writers from around the world and to share our stories. I love to see my social media feeds filled with art from loads of my favourite artists and discover the work of so many women who I wasn't aware of before.”
