A celebrated painting by Edouard Manet has been saved for the nation after an eight-month public campaign raised £7.8m to prevent it heading overseas. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford called it the "most significant acquisition" in its history.

A total of 1,069 people contributed so the Ashmolean could buy Manet's Portrait of Mademoiselle Claus and keep it in the UK. The last contribution, a sum of £30, was made yesterday morning by 11-year old Mara Talbot and her mother Vicky Hirsch.
