PICK OF THE WEEK
Rachel Whiteread
First major survey of the work of the laconic Whiteread, who shot to fame in 1993 with her controversial House. A previously unseen work in this country is Untitled (One Hundred Spaces), made for the Carnegie International, in which she perpetuates in resin the spaces beneath chairs and tables. Quite possibly, one of this year's unmissable exhibitions.
Tate Gallery, Liverpool (0151 7093223). To 5 Jan 1997
David Roberts
One of Scotland's favourite sons, Victorian traveller-painter Roberts is best remembered for his evocative paintings of the Middle East. In what promises to be a fascinating bicentenary exhibition, his work is examined alongside documentary evidence of his extraordinary life - a rags-to-riches tale woven around such friends as Turner, Dickens and Thackeray.
Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh (0131 5568921). Fri to 24 Nov
