After serious delays since February, the musical version of the adventures of comic book character Spider-Man is finally set to open on December 21 on Broadway, with previews beginning November 14 in New York City.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is directed by Julie Taymor ( Across the Universe, The Lion King) with music and lyrics written by U2's Bono and the Edge, a first for the band and Broadway.

Originally, Alan Cumming ( Spy Kids 3D: Game Over) was to play the villain Green Goblin, but backed out of the production due to scheduling conflicts with shooting the upcoming Burlesque and The Smurfs.

Another setback happened when Evan Rachel Wood, ( The Wrestler, Across the Universe) scheduled to play Spider-Man's love interest, also dropped out.

The play will star Broadway performers Reeve Carney as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Tony Award nominee Jennifer Damiano, and Patrick Page.

In the works for six years and costing up to $50 million, according to MTV, it is one of the most costly theatrical productions. Tickets for the show, playing at the Foxwoods Theater, go on sale in September.

Taymor's film The Tempest starring Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina, Russell Brand and Carney will be screened at the New York and Venice film festivals.

The upcoming film dedicated to the superhero, in 3D, is a prequel, featuring a new cast, including Andrew Garfield as the new Spider-Man. Marc Webb ( (500) Days of Summer) is the director and the film is scheduled to open July 3, 2012.
