Weekly arts agenda: PHotoEspaña, Berlin Biennale

(PHotoEspaña 2010)

During the week of June 7, visitors from across the globe will travel to Spain to see an international selection of spectacular photography at the largest cultural event in the country, PHotoEspaña. In Germany, the sixth Berlin Biennale for contemporary art will showcase the work of around 50 artists; works presented in cultural settings, public spaces, group exhibitions and solo shows across the city.

PHotoEspaña is a major international annual photography and visual arts festival that attracts more than 650,000 visitors per year. In 2010, 70 up-and-coming photographers will be selected and offered the opportunity to showcase their work to curators, gallery owners and editors as part of the 2010 Descubrimientos (discoveries) PHE portfolio review program.

Berlin Biennale

The sixth Berlin Biennale for contemporary art will take place across various locations across Berlin. The Biennale will encompass a curatorial workshop, seminars, debates, public lectures, multiple exhibitions and studio visits. Highlights of the event include Michael Schmidt's photographic works and a curated exhibition of works by Adolph Menzel.

Art Basel

Art Basel is heralded as the world's premier international art show for modern and contemporary art. Works from more than 2,500 artists - from the great masters of modern art to fresh-faced contemporaries creating the trends of tomorrow - will be shown at the 41st edition of Art Basel. In 2009 around 61,000 people attended the "favorite rendezvous of the global art world." Basel turns into an international art hub during the week of June 14, with a huge array of art fairs taking place in the city including the Hot Art Fair Basel, VOLTAshow, Design Miami/Basel, LISTE, PrintBasel, Verge Art Fair Basel, and Red Dot Basel.

The tenth edition of the Melbourne International Animation Festival (MIAF10) is a nine-day festival of some of the greatest animation created by artists around the world. The festival is an international showcase of animated short films. For the tenth anniversary, MIAF10 is putting on a specially curated program that includes highlights from the 10 years of international animation festival including a selection of Australian animations, "late night bizarre," and student films. This year's best talent has been selected from the more than 12,000 entries.

OFFF International Festival for the Post Digital Creation Culture

For its 10th anniversary the OFFF festival is once again departing from its home town of Barcelona and relocating to Paris. The festival - which has previously ventured to venues like New York, Lisbon and Oeiras - will focus on the theme of "Nostalgia For A Past Future" in 2010. The festival's eventful three-day calendar includes a design conference, a multimedia trade fair, a digital animation program, performances, talks, workshops for artists, and most of all aims to celebrate all kinds of visual culture.

Close Examination: Fakes, Mistakes and Discoveries paints a picture of "some of the most intriguing stories behind paintings in the Gallery" while highlighting how scientific progress has facilitated the ongoing investigation of a painting's physical properties and origins.
