LOUISE BROOKS made more than 20 pictures in Europe and America during her 13-year screen career; but her reputation today is largely based on just one film: G W Pabst's 1929 silent classic Pandora's Box, or Die Busche der Pandora to give it its original German title. Brooks's portrayal of the high-class prostitute Lulu is one of the cinema's most memorable performances, and certainly one of its most erotic. With her androgynous modern looks, thick black bob and forthright attitude to sex, Lulu is as mesmerising today as when she first exposed herself to the German public more than 60 years ago.
