Viral TikTok video reveals Stephanie Meyer's favourite word

Following the news that Stephenie Meyer will publish a new book, Midnight Sun, from her Twilight saga this summer, fans are returning to the original series for a refresher.

When they were first published between 2005 to 2008, the Twilight books became a global phenomenon that only grew with the blockbuster film adaptations starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

The books told the story of the romance between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, a vampire ((played by Stewart and Pattinson in the films). The books are told primarily from Bella’s perspective, however, Midnight Sun will be written from Edward’s.

While the series broke countless industry records, however, critics were unfavourable when it came to Meyer’s literary abilities.

Horror author Stephen King commented: “The real difference [between Rowling and Meyer] is that JK Rowling is a terrific writer, and Stephanie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”

A review for Salon said: “The characters, such as they are, are stripped down to a minimum, lacking the texture and idiosyncrasies of actual people.”

It added: “Twilight would be a lot more persuasive as an argument that an ‘amazing heart’ counts for more than appearances if it didn’t harp so incessantly on Edward’s superficial splendours.”

In a new TikTok video, user @kkolesaire shared footage of herself reading the first Twilight book and pointing out one of the major flaws in Meyer’s series: her apparently limited vocabulary.

In each clip she highlights the word “chuckled” which, it turns out, crops up an awful lot. Instances include Edward chuckling “darkly”, “blackly”, and “humourlessly”.

A description released by the publisher teases Midnight Sun as: “This unforgettable tale as told through Edward’s eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting beautiful, mysterious Bella is both the most intriguing and unnerving event he has experienced in his long life as a vampire.

“As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he let himself fall in love with Bella when he knows that he is endangering her life?”

Midnight Sun is scheduled for release on 4 August.
