A remote province of Italy is the setting for a compulsive investigation of dark corners of the human heart. Though he lived 500 miles away, Jones found himself attracted by Basilicata.

In 1993, fascination turned to obsession following the disappearance of 16-year-old Elisa Claps. The suspect was a hair fetishist called Danilo Restivo, but corruption and inefficiency protected him.

After moving back to England in 2002, Jones spotted a report in a paper about the unsolved murder of a local woman. It included a photo of the victim's neighbour: Danilo Restivo.
