Ranging from the shocking to the poignant, 80 London voices produce a vivid collage of this impossible city.

"Men will wait until… there's a serious danger of something falling off," says a nurse in a genito-urinary clinic. "I love roundabouts… It's like a samba," says a driving instructor.

"There's something about that hour [2.30am] when you don't encounter a single lucid, sane person," says a female nightclub door-attendant.

"I especially like 'Piccadilly Circus'… the rhythm of it," says the "Voice of the Tube".

Comparisons with Henry Mayhew are not excessive.
