The story of an annus horribilis in the life of the much-loved Woman's Hour presenter, this memoir begins with her diagnosis with breast cancer and the death of her mother, and ends at her dying father's bedside.

Remarkably, it is a humorous and deeply human account, looking back at the rejected little girl who became the voice of Radio 4.

Murray is not afraid to make herself look bad to tell her mother's story, and does so with generosity and an understanding of women's lives before washing machines and supposed equal pay.

The chatty tone will not be to everyone's taste, but the result is a warm and revealing memoir.
