Shibuya, one of the less explicitly political books by the English photo-journalist Adam Hinton, is a series of portraits of commuters using one of the world's busiest train stations, in Shibuya, Tokyo.
Catching them in private or contemplative moments, and somehow isolated from their fellow travellers, its mood is paradoxically quiet and still, yet it also speaks of their weariness, and of the heavy toll of participating in a market-driven economy. Says Hinton: "Little did I know about the terrible events that would befall Japan two months later [earthquake and tsunami], which seems to add another layer to the images."
