The books you listen to

Definitely not just the soundtrack of the blockbusting film, Dirk Magg's Independence Day UK (Polygram, 1hr, pounds 5.99) is a spectacular audio movie which tells how Patrick Moore and British Tornado pilots save the Queen and work out how to defeat the unsavoury aliens, well before the Yanks do. It succeeds in being both heart-in-mouth and tongue-in-cheek.

I've tried and failed to read Herman Melville's great classic of the sea, times without number. The new abridged version of Moby Dick (Penguin, 2hrs, pounds 11.99) read by William Hootkins, proved compulsive listening.
