The Jungle Book (right) After the storming success of his Grimm Tales, Tim Supple directs this wonderfully physical production, full of visual flair, strong music and bold humour, which banishes Disney cuteness and keeps its audience enthralled. Young Vic, London SE1

The Count of Monte Cristo Ken Hill's adaptation of the classic Dumas novel is boisterous, blowsy, swashbuckling hokum. I know Christmas is over, but why not grab a bunch of kids and have a silly night out? Nuffield Theatre, Southampton

Company Nothing, not even Sam Mendes's unwise decision to update it, can stop you realising what a great score this is, full of bite, balls and bravura. Liza Sadovy leads the singing, and Sheila Gish is just plain glorious. Donmar Warehouse, London WC2
