`Babul' by Bikash Bhattacharjee, 1994: one of a number of unusual paintings included in Art of Modern India by Balraj Khanna and Aziz Kurtha (Thames & Hudson, pounds 24.95). The Calcutta-born Bhattacharjee has exhibited in Paris, Oxford and New York. The editors' introduction is a concise history of Indian art in this century; it describes a vibrant and energetic community of artists whose work is not well known internationally. The placid and roomy atmosphere of `Babul' - it looks as much like Virginia Water as Bengal - will surprise those who expect (or prefer) their Indian art to
look exotic.
