CLASSICAL: NEW RELEASES
One of Gluck's French operas in which he eloquently resets a libretto used by Lully a century earlier. Marc Minkowski and his immaculate period instrument forces have the full range of Gluck's score - from transparent chamber textures to grand ceremonials - firmly in their grasp. The gorgeous instrumental underlay is surmounted by some terrific vocal work, not least the sumptuous voice of Mireille Delunsch in the title role. HHHHH
Gluck Armide
Les Musiciens du Louvre, Minkowski (DG Archiv)
Lutoslawski Symphony No 1, Chantefleurs et Chantefables
Polish National RSO, De Wit (Naxos)
Another excellent release in Naxos's survey of Lutoslawski's orchestral works, played by his fellow countrymen and tautly directed by Antoni de Wit. The Bartok-influenced Symphony No 1 receives a forthright yet colourful reading, and Olga Pasiecznik is a glowing soloist in the playful song cycle Chantefleurs et Chantefables. HHHH
