In January, the Metropolitan Opera will present its fifth and sixth Live in HD broadcasts of the season, transmitting live performances of Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier and Bizet's Carmen in high definition to theaters around the world. Der Rosenkavalier is scheduled for January 9 at 1:00 pm EST; Carmen follows on January 16 at the same time.

Superstar soprano Renée Fleming stars as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, Richard Strauss's masterpiece set in 18th-century Vienna. Other headliners are Susan Graham as Octavian and Kristinn Sigmundsson as Baron Ochs.

Carmen, one of the most popular operas of all time, will feature El?na Garan?a as Carmen, with Roberto Alagna as Don José, Barbara Frittoli as Micaëla, and Mariusz Kwiecien as the matador Escamillo.

Both productions will be transmitted live via satellite to more than 1,000 movie theaters, performing arts centers, universities, and museums in more than 40 countries. In addition to the live transmissions, encore performances are planned in some theaters.

Along with full opera performances, Live in HD presentations include interviews with performers, producers, and technicians, plus other behind-the-scenes footage.
