The cello and piano piece Patterns in a Chromatic Field dates from the early 1980s, when Feldman's fascination with subtly asymmetric patternings was yielding to the obsession with stasis that would lead to monumental epics.
At about 90 minutes, this version is considerably shortened, but the sense of scale is unchanged thanks to Feldman's opening, which suggests we've chanced on something already under way. Oya and Deforce cope ably with the composition's disciplined requirements, the latter particularly adept at conjuring the cello's ghostly, floating tone.
