This 10-CD box set does what the title suggests, presenting all of Rubinstein's Chopin recordings in replicas of their original album sleeves.
Some of the earliest transfers aren't so "clean" – parts of his 1946 Preludes have an irritating hiss; but when the pianist is in full torrent, as on the brief 'Prelude No 16 in B-flat minor', it makes little difference. The florid gusto of Rubinstein's playing may not suit modern tastes, but he is clearly engaged with his material, rendering such considerations meaningless; and at his best, he is breathtaking.
