Only 15 of the 60-plus secular cantatas Bach wrote for the grandees of Weimar, Cthen and Leipzig survive complete. Of these, but a handful are regularly performed, leaving a lovely gap in the market for the young French ensemble Caf Zimmerman and Gustav Leonhardt, the grand old man of Historically Informed Performance Practice. Recorded so closely that one can hear the 12-part choir, brass and woodwind breathe in on Leonhardt's judiciously paced upbeats, their performance of Angenehmes Widerau and the Brandenburg-rehash Vereinigte Zwietracht is clear, warm, vivid and perfectly balanced. A model recording.
