The liner notes remind us that Bach's Cello Suites are arranged "in increasing order of complexity", almost as a lesson.

Emotionally, this performance works in reverse, achieving something close to ecstasy in the virtuosic passagework of the D-major Suite after the severity of the introspective G-major and D-minor Suites. Tunnicliffe's sound is generous and finely grained, the faster dances sharply pointed, the sarabandes dark pools of metreless beauty.
