Think Darmstadt and the music that comes to mind is the rip-it-up post-war rebellion of Stockhausen, Boulez and Berio.

Yet the Darmstadt celebrated in this excellent recording was a well-funded outpost of baroque music and home to the composer Christoph Graupner (1683-1760). Reminiscent of Telemann's music in their sweet temper and magpie stylings, Graupner's overtures and concertos are duskily attractive, while the violin sonatas have Italianate verve.
