Album: Elgar, Violin Concerto – Znaider/Davis (RCA Red Seal)

In the 2008 Proms, Nikolaj Znaider and Sir Colin Davis slowed Beethoven's Violin Concerto to a near static state of bliss. Surprising, then, that their Elgar is so dynamic.

Znaider's famous pianississimi feature strongly here, along with double-stopped octaves you could use as dental floss. Technically and interpretively, it's a beautifully argued account that balances Elgar's fretful diversions and long-suffering, melodic nobility. Though the Staatskapelle's leader works too hard to gee up his troops, the tutti sound is warm and clear.
