Stravinsky's The Rite Of Spring has exactly the qualities of rhythm, rebirth, youthful energy and pagan gaiety that might have been specifically designed for Gustavo Dudamel's elebrated Simó*Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, and they don't disappoint in their treatment of this landmark work.
It's paired here with the Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas' Night Of The Maya, which occupies similarly pagan territory, building to a furious conclusion involving eleven percussionists improvising enthusiastically. It's not as transgressive as The Rite Of Spring, but there's an equivalent boldness about its realisation.
