Album: Julian Bream, The Art of Julian Bream (Él)

As well as being the pre-eminent classical Spanish guitarist of his generation, Julian Bream did more than anybody to emancipate the instrument beyond its purely national musical associations.

Alongside pieces by Rodrigo, Albéniz, Turina and De Falla are included here some exquisite baroque sonatas by Scarlatti and Cimarosa, and his own revelatory arrangement of Ravel's "Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte". In particular, Bream's securing of commissions from Britten, Berkeley and Walton broadened the guitar repertoire to incorporate a distinctively British element, most impressively in Malcolm Arnold's "Guitar Concerto, Op. 67".
