This debut disc from the duo of flautist Baldvinsson and pianist Romero is designed to showcase the breadth of their repertoire
From Bach's Flute Sonata No 6 in E major, BWV 1035 to more modern pieces by Saint-Saëns, Poulenc, Prokofiev and François Borne, the last better known for his innovations in flute design than for his "Fantaisie Brilliante sur Carmen", whose showy titivations the duo imbue with due brio.
Baldvinsson's work in Saint-Saëns's Romance in D flat major Op 37 is measured and calm, if a little lacking in lustre; characteristics that more agreeably suit Poulenc's Sonata for Flute and Piano, from 1957.
Pick of the album:Sonata for Flute and Piano; 'Fantaisie Brilliante sur Carmen'
