Spiritual grandfather to Maurice Sendak's wolf-suited Max, the hero of Maurice Ravel's opera learns what happens to naughty boys with vivid imaginations when his much-abused toys, pets and furniture bite back.

Simon Rattle's live recording is sumptuously cast – with Magdalena Kozena, Annick Massis, Nathalie Stutzmann among others. Moments of vocal dryness aside, it's a stylishly detailed romp. A saunter through "Ma Mère l'Oye" completes a sophisticated nursery treat.

Pick of the album: Arithmetic goes postal in 'Deux robinets...'
