Dance: Event of the week
La Fille mal Gardee today to Sat 9 Jan
Royal Festival Hall
Lise and Colas love each other, but Lise's mother, the Widow Simone, wants her to marry someone else in Frederick Ashton's bucolic La Fille mal Gardee. Where there's a will, there's a way, and Lise gets up to all sorts of tricks. Children will love the dancing chickens and Widow Simone's clog solo; adults will warm to the charm, comedy and humanity, although a lot depends on the performers. The Royal Ballet is offering many casts, among which is the dazzling new Cuban recruit Carlos Acosta as Colas, opposite lovely Belinda Hatley's Lise (Mon, Wed, and Sat 9 Jan matinee). Miyako Yoshida and Irek Mukhamedov (today and Thur) also promise to be an alluring couple, as do Sarah Wildor and Bruce (Mon matinee and Sat 9 Jan).
Royal Ballet, Royal Festival Hall, London SE1 (0171-960 4242) today to Sat 9 Jan, 2pm matinees and 7pm
