ON THE BACK of such mega-hits as Trainspotting and The Full Monty, Robert Carlyle (right) has entered the movie big league, where he is able to pick roles at will. Noted for his integrity, however, he is unlikely to want to stop appearing in arthouse ventures such as Carla's Song (10pm FilmFour). Showing in FilmFour's "Made in Britain" season, Ken Loach's moving film centres on a Glasgow bus driver (Carlyle) who falls for a Nicaraguan refugee (Oyanka Cabezas) and then becomes embroiled in the civil war between the Sandinistas and the Contras.

With singles such as "My Girl", "Embarrassment" and "House of Fun", Madness was one the most successful pop bands of the 1980s. With their regular "Madstock" festivals, they are now recapturing that popularity. They feature on tonight's Madness Special (10pm VH1).
